    Away from Base program

The Away from Base (AFB) program enables eligible Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to participate in the necessary academic components of an approved mixed mode/online course that requires students to travel away from their permanent home or study location for a short period of time, or for reverse block deliveries.

Reverse-block is a form of ‘mixed-mode’ delivery where Away from Base funding may be used to support teachers providing reverse-block training delivery in regional and remote communities. Reverse block funding must only cover relevant fares, meals and accommodation costs of teachers and not course delivery costs.

    Support is available

The Away from Base (AFB) program helps eligible Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students attend required study activities by covering reasonable travel, accommodation and meal expenses when studying away from their usual place of residence.

Away from Base funding may also cover reasonable travel, accommodation and meal expenses for teachers delivering reverse block training.

What AFB funding can be used for:

    • Travel - approved travel options include flights, buses, coaches, trains and private vehicles.
    • Meals - meals arranged for students during study blocks, including breakfast, lunch and dinner.
    • Accommodation - accommodation arranged for students close to the TAFE NSW campus where training is being delivered.

For more information about eligibility and funding support, refer to the Away from Base program resources.

    Frequently asked questions

Note: Away from Base funding assists Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with study-related travel and accommodation expenses, but it doesn't cover traineeships or apprenticeships.
